Swords Up!

October just seems to be the month of big news around here! And while everything pales in comparison to a new baby coming this spring, me thinks you should know that something else is due this spring…

…a final draft of a new co-authored book between me and Wayne Thomas Batson for the #1 Christian Publisher in the world, Thomas Nelson!

When Wayne and I first started meeting in Scranton two years ago for our “Writers Bootcamp,” we joked about how fun it would be to write a book together one day. But apparently the Lord was listening, and He didn’t see it as a joke. When Wayne was asked by Nelson for a new Young Adult fiction title, he asked if he had the option to bring on another writer. His agent said yes, to my complete astonishment he asked me! Wayne still sweeps the grandeur of it under the carpet, but his graciousness is astounding.

So for the next few months Wayne and I will be pounding away on not one, but two new books together in the form of a mini-series. And I’m totally stoked for this project: One, this plot is one of a kind. And two, I get to write it with one of my best buds! Please go over to his blog and congratulate him. And yes, I’m almost done editing Book 3! (You guys are animals!).

Swords up!

H3 Due Out This Spring!

No, not the industry’s next Hummer…it’s the next Hopper! With the loss of our unborn little one still fresh in our minds from over the summer in France, we feel confident to announce that the Lord has given us another wonderful life to steward. On loan to us from Jesus, H3 is due to arrive June 1, 2009 with Jennifer now 8 weeks along. Thanks to all those of you who have stood by us and lifted our family up in your prayers. He has truly turned mourning into dancing.

(The kids were a little nervious about having their picture taken in the leaves; it was a first for them).

It’s Wayne. Need I Say More?

I left the Eric Peters post up for a week now in the hopes that it would get a lot of prime face time on my site. If you haven’t read about his project, or taken the opportunity to invest in it, please do so right now.

As a post-Fantasy Fiction Tour followup idea we had–no one wanting the festivities of tour-life to end–we decided to take the next eight Mondays and feature each author on our websites. It is of course a little redundant, thinking that if you don’t know every one’s names by now then you must be a newbie to my site; but then again that’s the reason why I’m doing this. If you haven’t heard of Wayne, then allow me to introduce you.

Short of being an outstanding author with well over 100,000 books in print, Wayne Thomas Batson is also a husband, father, school teacher…and a devoted friend. I really can’t say enough about the guy without risking the error of flattery. But one thing is for sure–something I can say about each and every author on the Tour–that he’s the real deal. That’s important. Because if I could know for sure the quality of individual that pens the pages of the books my children read, that I would be much quicker to invest in them.

Authors, musicians, painters, poets and the like all create out of themselves. We are moved by our own life-experiences and allow them to breathe into our work. In the end, you are getting “life as interpreted by the artist.” So when you read Rise of The Dibor, you are getting a little bit of Christopher Hopper. When you read The Door Within, you are getting a little bit of Wayne Thomas Batson. I think that is one reason why people are so enamored with celebrities, especially actors. As film most dynamically connects an audience to the media (sight and sound), people feel as if they actually know the actors. Of course it’s very limited and superficial in most cases, but I believe their is still an impartation, if even on a spiritual level.

As personal practice, I always tend to consciously keep my guard up whenever I see a movie, aware of scenes and songs that try and compromise my integrity. Granted, I try and get as much foreknowledge as possible, but there are elements that even the sharpest critics won’t pick up because they are incidents that know one else would ever think of; they are proprietary to my life experiences.

So being able to actually know where an artist is coming from, what moves them, and what they think life should be like, is of paramount importance if you want to move beyond the shallowest of compliments, “I think it’s cool.” What are their core beliefs and what are you receiving when you receive their art into your life?

This, of course, is the long way around of telling you by what measure I judge art: not on the art alone, but on the artist as an individual. And Wayne would not be my friend if he did not have full marks. He is one of the most caring and kind souls I have ever met (despite his ferocity with a long sword), and that translates into love for his wife, his children, and the students he pours his life out for everyday. He truly has a tender heart and huge dose of creativity, two things I admire greatly.

Lastly, his devotion to the Lord is humbling. Quick to say he doesn’t “get it all,” and easy with sharing his faults, Wayne is 24 carat in his faith. No pretenses. No guile. He is a broken man in need of a Mighty God, something that the Lord obviously cherishes. For when we are weak, He is strong, and a broken and contrite spirit God will not despise.

If nothing else, you have to at least love his pirate costume!

Thanks for being my friend, Sir Wayne. Never alone…

A New Musical Paradigm

Among the many passions of my life, there is a growing desire to see the Bride of Christ reclaim her rightful place as dominant benefactor of the Arts, a title she once owned in the day of Rembrandt and Beethoven, but abdicated shortly thereafter. Much of the decline was in pursuit of “internal spending” rather than advancing the Gospel and the things that propel it, much of it was simply apathy. But I am convinced we live in a day where that can be and is being corrected; if we have cause to be excited as Christians, it is today. Never before have we had the ability to influence world culture like we do now.

The obese and lethargic models of business that were once a necessity over the past three decades have quickly become outdated; if they fail to advance with the times, they will be obsolete. I do not scold them for the power they carried. Hardly. Millions have heard and seen the Gospel because of them, even if the motive was worldly. I rejoice that Christ has been preached.

But what awaits us is a world redefined by artists that corporations formerly overlooked because they didn’t look right, sound right, or speak right. On the horizon, already dawning, is a prophetic voice of Divine Dreamers who have a means to create, a vehicle to distribute, and a means to market art that is not inhibited by the almighty dollar or pop-culture.

With the advent of technology, true artists are able to reach their audience in unimaginable ways, and thus affect culture unimaginably. Simply put, this is exciting.

A perfect example is Eric Peters. I just read about his new project today on The Rabbit Room and would advise you to check it out. For three reasons, besides the fact that he’s producing great art: The first is that Eric is free from having to record with a record label. He is doing it with the community of artists around him. Thus he has complete control of the art. Secondly, Eric is using technology to communicate his need to his benefactors, something that previously would have taken a phenomenal amount of energy and time to do. And thirdly, he is turning to the private sector for support. Now, that is not new. Surely. In fact, it is very old…

…something done back in Rembrandt and Beethoven’s day.

Benefactors would house an artist and pay for their needs while they created their next masterpiece. Or they would pay for their continuing education. Or they would use their status to endorse a great artist and promote them to a place of cultural prominence.

Sounds like a record company. Almost. Accept where a record company would own 100% of an artists publishing rights (yup, you heard me), Eric will keep 100% of his rights. He’ll make the art he feels that God is calling him to make, and communicate it unhindered to a diverse audience. But that’s not the strongest point; that’s where I come in.

I. Me. A member of the Church. A Kingdom representative of the Lord Jesus Christ here on earth. I am investing. Not some Christian Record Label who is actually owned and controlled by a secular giant. Me, Christopher Hopper. Husband, father, Jesus-follower. My money has gone into Eric creating his next album. And in doing so, I reflect on the beautiful Bride of Christ by rectifying the errors made in the past.

Talk is cheap. Tired of how things are done? Then change it. But be forewarned: It will cost you; but the way I see it, $50.00 is a small price to help the Church once again set precedent for what true Art should be.

Thanks for reading, and for advancing the Gospel with Eric. Now, go contribute…

Back In NY

Jennifer and I just arrived back in NY after many hours aloft. It feels good to be back on the east coast, although we have many new and wonderful memories forged out of an incredibly unique tour down the west coast. Things finished off with much hooting and hollering at Barnes & Noble in San Diego around 4:01pm PT. From there we had a group meal at Islands (Yaki Tacos are num nums!) and reminisced about the week. There was much laughter had by all.

The following few hours were a slew of hugs and even some tears as we all said goodbye, a divine melancholy falling over everyone. Although each one of us was eager to get back to family and routine, it dawned on me that we had done the very thing we all write about: join together on an epic adventure to bring Truth and advance God’s Kingdom. And what a tale it is…

We’ll be working on the remaining few days of Video Journals this week and post them shortly. Between the succession of bad internet connections and little time to edit video, we have been behind on production.

A big thank you to Pam Schwagerl at Tsaba House for her amazing dedication to this tour and putting the schedule together, as well as to Gregg Wooding for his amazing talents in promoting us. Also to my tour mates: Donita K. Paul, Eric Reinhold, Jonthan Rogers, L.B. Graham, and the originals, Wayne Thomas Batson, Bryan Davis and Sharon Hinck. I consider them all family…adventure-mates of the grandest sort. And a big shout out to Amanda and Penny who went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to “the miscellaneous” tasks of the tour. I’d also like to thank all of the publishers that we represent who so generously invested into the financial backing and promotion of this tour, as well as our amazing sponsors, RealArmorofGod.com, Hotel Burgess, and Character 4 Kids.

I’ll be posting more pictures as we process them; Jennifer shot well over 1,000 with some spectacular scenes of God’s creation I can’t wait for you to see.

Last, but certainly not least, I must thank all of you who came out and supported us on the road. The fans! Where would we be without you? Books are meant to be read, so if you weren’t reading them, not only would we not have had anyone at our events, but we wouldn’t even be writing. So thank you, thank you, thank you. The countless words of encouragement I received from teens who were inspired, moms who were grateful, dads who were provoked to talk to their sons, children who were awed…these are what we live for. You are why we write. That Christ might live in you, the Hope of Glory.

Video Journal – Day 3 – 10.06.08 – Sacramento, California

MOTIV8 Fantasy Fiction Tour: Day Three finds the authors invading northern California, and there is no lack of flare here! Stops include Trinity Christian School and Barnes & Noble in Sacramento.

Video Journal – Day 2 – 10.05.08 – Portland, Oregon

On our Oregon stop, we started off with a rainy, impromptu gathering under a gazebo in Portland and finished with a bang at Medford’s mall. A huge crowd gathered for the signing put on by Evangel Family Bookstore and were treated to, among other things, a reading by Jonathan Rogers and a humorous dual between myself & Sir Wayne! Enjoy!

(The fun and funky Portuguese/Brazilian music is in honor of Nathan Reimer).
