Monday Tunes: Jonny Lang

jonny lang live

jonny_lang_taI was just saying to my wife that there are very few albums which I love every song of, and play it start to finish without a single cringe. Jonny Lang‘s “Turn Around” is one of those. For some reason his CD never made it into any of our Macs, and had itself been missing for months, when Jenny unearthed in a recent holiday-cleaning-spree over the weekend. My Monday day-off is now jamming. Who are you listening to? ch:

The Last This Side of Heaven

rearview 2

This morning, I twittered, “Sing today as if it’s your last opportunity this side of heaven.” Of course, it was in the context of Sunday morning church worship services. But really, it applies to so many other valuable things in life, especially those pertaining to our outward displays of affection toward God…and toward other people.

Very often we relegate our emotional responses toward relationships to controlled, cerebral thought patterns, shared with few, if anyone at all. We tend to internalize feelings, making excuses for why they should not or can not be communicated outwardly, much less overtly. Insecurity. Shame. Fear. Or simply ignorance. Yet the practice of making excuses has many faults, the least of which is that it most often comes from a sense of false humility, which, oddly enough, is an offensive form of pride. Granted, there are plenty of cases where one might cite that they were never instructed to be verbose in emotions, or that it was not the standard of the day. My father’s generation, for example, rarely–if ever–heard, “I love you, son,” from their World War II era parents. While these excuses certainly have merit, for the Christian they must be reconciled with the fact that Jesus was extremely verbose in his lifestyle of love. And in His ultimate display if the emotion: death in exchange for life. Thus why it’s referred to as The Passion.

This side of heaven, you may not have another chance to tell your spouse how much you really love them. You may not have another night to tuck in your children and tell them they are the greatest. You may not have a chance to anonymously put some cash in someone’s pocket, hug a friend just because you can, or–like today–go up to a total stranger in McDonald’s and encourage them about how great a dad they are. Because today might be your last time this side of heaven to do anything. So what will you do? ch:

When Do You Tree?

christmas tree 09

Normally it’s November 1st. Because of our traveling schedule, and the immense amount of time we spend investing into other peoples’ lives, we normally have what feels to be a very short Christmas season. So we try and squeeze in as many days as possible with our Christmas Tree. This year, we haven’t had time to even get the Tree. But that ends today, November 28th. Check in later to watch us snag our ’09 Tree live. So when do you get your Christmas Tree? And is it real or artificial? Cut yourself, or bought pre-wrapped? ch:

Black Friday: Shopping or Turkey?

shopping_or_turkey

The way I see it, you have one of two choices on Black Friday. Either 1.) you feel the need to run out of the house screaming, only to find yourself fighting through crowds of people who all share your frantic motivation to get out of the house, only to find themselves surrounded by…well…you! Or 2.) you are staying home to clean, and force-feed yourself leftovers, figuring out newfangled ways to prepare turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing that won’t induce vomiting (which subsequently option 1. gets you out of…although many people vomit over fast food).

So, which is it? Or, do you have some tertiary option with which to enlighten us on?

For me, I’m home with the kids and bro & sis in-law watching Pixar’s “Up,” while Jennifer, her Mom, and Amber are out for coffee. Yes, I’m still in my PJs, unshowered, unshaven, and suffering from a NyQuil hangover. ch:

How Do You Cook Your Turkey?

I’m just curious, how do you prepare your turkey? This year, I’m attempting yet another fried turkey, but complete with not-so-secret ingredients courtesy of master chef @denis_jr. Using 100% peanut oil, Tony Chachere’s Creole Butter injection, and rub, frying at 350-degrees at 3.5-minutes per pound. So, do tell! And Happy Thanksgiving! ch:

Daily Qik Video Updates

Because I simply love technology (more specifically my iPhone and qik.com), and because Christians should be exploiting every opportunity we can to affect culture through said technology, I’ve decided to start posting daily video updates, live, from my iPhone. I’ll alert you through Twitter and FaceBook when I’ll be going live, while the feeds will automatically be categorized and archived for later viewing if you wish. ch:
