Playing Ketchup

I felt it was late enough that a good pun was in order.

But actually, it’s “catch up,” as I’m two weeks behind in faithfully posting about my tour mates on the blog follow-up to the Fantasy Fiction Tour – West Coast ’08.

First, the Ladies of the Tour: Ms. Donita K. Paul and Mrs. Sharon Hinck.

Sharon and I go way back…well, not necessarily in years spent knowing one another, but in shared history. During last year’s tour, when we began sharing our life-stories on the road, I explained how I was raised in a little town in upstate NY in a hippie community where church was anything but dull. Suddenly Sharon exclaims, “You mean Love Inn?” To say I was shocked would be a gross understatement. As it turned out, the very radio show that my father spent many years of his life producing–one of the very first Christian radio broadcasts in the country (the Scott Ross show…now with CBN)–was the very same radio program Sharon would tune in to all the way out in the MidWest. Dawn Sandquist, one of her heroes in worship dance, was my teacher. And when “Uncle Phil” [Keaggy]–who also once called Freeville, NY his home– turned out to our Nashville stop, you would have thought Sharon was about to explode.

Needless to say I am forever endeared to Sharon, her sincere and gentle faith, and her passion for the arts. If you have not picked up her Restorers series, or any of her other fine novels, you are really missing out on a marvelous woman of the Christan faith.

Next comes Donita K. Paul, the woman I consider the Queen of Christian Fantasy, the Momma of Dragon Fiction, or known by most simply as “The Dragon Lady.” I had the privilege of meeting Donita on the same, momentous day that I met Wayne Thomas Batson, Bryan Davis, and Angela Hunt for the first time. And right away I knew that I loved her. There was something magical about her. She loves you like your mom, hugs you like your grandma, and tells stories like your favorite Kindergarten teacher.

While each author on the FFT has their unique fortes, I was spellbound the first time Donita took the stage in Abbotsford, BC, as were all those in attendance. While the rest of us were busy talking and giving our anecdotes, flailing swords and being loud, Donita took to the stage and sat silently in her chair. Suddenly, her hands moved, painting a picture with mime, and soon began telling a story as the bards of old might have. No one stirred and all eyes were on her…mesmerized.

Donita is a marvelous woman of the faith, spirited, yet full of genuine love for people. Again, please make a point of investing in her works, best known for her Dragon Keeper series, if you haven’t already.

Lastly, I’d like to showcase Mr. Eric Reinhold for a moment. Eric was also new to the FFT this year and heralds from Orlando, FL. When he’s not authoring his next novel, he’s managing people’s money. Not the combination you expected? Well, that’s not the only unusual thing about this guy! He’s far from the typical “author persona” you might expect of a book-wormed, computer-fixed individual. He’s hilarious! And wild! And sarcastic! So many times he had me almost spitting out whatever I happened to be drinking or eating, and always kept the tour light.

Eric is also dedicated to the Lord, his family, and to his work. Extremely passionate in all he does, we had the chance to encourage Eric (and watch him go through a series of emotional roller coaster rides) as the stock market began its crash the beginning of October. But through it all he has remained successful and true to his integrity as a man of God and a phenomenal manager of peoples’ wealth. I admire him greatly and appreciate his friendship.

Do make sure to sop by his website and let him know I sent you. The Ryan Watters series will be great for any young teens on your Christmas list.

That’s all for now, readers! Thanks for waiting patiently for some content other than pictures. It’s been a busy month. And if you’d like to sign up for my newsletter (which just went out last week), please sign up here. (You should get the last issue automatically sent to your email when you register).

Blessings!

Back In NY

Jennifer and I just arrived back in NY after many hours aloft. It feels good to be back on the east coast, although we have many new and wonderful memories forged out of an incredibly unique tour down the west coast. Things finished off with much hooting and hollering at Barnes & Noble in San Diego around 4:01pm PT. From there we had a group meal at Islands (Yaki Tacos are num nums!) and reminisced about the week. There was much laughter had by all.

The following few hours were a slew of hugs and even some tears as we all said goodbye, a divine melancholy falling over everyone. Although each one of us was eager to get back to family and routine, it dawned on me that we had done the very thing we all write about: join together on an epic adventure to bring Truth and advance God’s Kingdom. And what a tale it is…

We’ll be working on the remaining few days of Video Journals this week and post them shortly. Between the succession of bad internet connections and little time to edit video, we have been behind on production.

A big thank you to Pam Schwagerl at Tsaba House for her amazing dedication to this tour and putting the schedule together, as well as to Gregg Wooding for his amazing talents in promoting us. Also to my tour mates: Donita K. Paul, Eric Reinhold, Jonthan Rogers, L.B. Graham, and the originals, Wayne Thomas Batson, Bryan Davis and Sharon Hinck. I consider them all family…adventure-mates of the grandest sort. And a big shout out to Amanda and Penny who went above and beyond the call of duty when it came to “the miscellaneous” tasks of the tour. I’d also like to thank all of the publishers that we represent who so generously invested into the financial backing and promotion of this tour, as well as our amazing sponsors, RealArmorofGod.com, Hotel Burgess, and Character 4 Kids.

I’ll be posting more pictures as we process them; Jennifer shot well over 1,000 with some spectacular scenes of God’s creation I can’t wait for you to see.

Last, but certainly not least, I must thank all of you who came out and supported us on the road. The fans! Where would we be without you? Books are meant to be read, so if you weren’t reading them, not only would we not have had anyone at our events, but we wouldn’t even be writing. So thank you, thank you, thank you. The countless words of encouragement I received from teens who were inspired, moms who were grateful, dads who were provoked to talk to their sons, children who were awed…these are what we live for. You are why we write. That Christ might live in you, the Hope of Glory.

CSFF via France: Donita K. Paul

Because I’m teaching at 10am and 7pm everyday this week in France, my time for blogging is slightly limited. For all those following our trip and praying for us, we landed safely on Friday and had a great weekend. Saturday we participated in a beautiful wedding and Sunday we were at our French home church. I also got to go play paint ball with all the guys from the discipleship school in a fort circa 1875! Talk about cool! I’ll be speaking all this week for EDEN and then preaching and teaching at the “Raidikal for Jesus” youth conference next weekend.

Although this single day’s post is far from what I normally put in to a CSFF Blog Tour post, it does not by any means speak against the writings of this month’s highlighted author. Of all our guests, I truly wish I had more time to invest…bummer it falls at an awkward time for me. Donita K. Paul is not only a gifted and notable author–she is a true “mom” in the writing and teaching world. In the same way I still keep in touch with my high school English teach, Mrs. Grace, I know I would treat Donita the same way (and kinda’ do anyways!).

Her latest book, DragonLight, has just hit shelves and if you’re a fan of fantasy, do yourself a favor and just go buy it. Trust me. But know that you’re reading lines penned from a wonderful, Godly woman of the faith. I tend to think of her as the “Christian Momma’ o’ Fiction.”

I first met Donita in 2006 while participating in a book signing at a Barnes & Noble in Denver. I can’t tell you too much about that day (other than meeting Wayne Batson and Bryan Davis, too!), but I can tell you I was touched by her instant love for me and Jennifer. Genuine to the core. She just leaked love and care. And she has been nothing but kind since that day.

It’s obviously an honor to have her on the Fantasy Fiction Tour this fall–something she had wanted to do last summer with us, but was unable to do so because of health reasons. She stands out to me as one of the pioneers of modern Christian fiction…as a pace setter.

Please have a look around her site, pick up her book on Amazon, and see what everyone else is saying about her below.

Thanks for reading, and for your continued prayers while we’re over seas.

Fantasy Fiction Tour hits the WEST COAST in 2008

Hey’a gang!

It is with great pleasure that I get to announce the long-awaited sequel to last year’s ground-breaking Fantasy Fiction Tour, this year hitting the West Coast October 4th thru 12th.

Most of my readers will remember last year’s exciting journey starting in Atlanta and ending in Manhattan. Well, it made such a stir in the industry that we decided to do it all again…but bigger!

Four additional authors have been added to last year’s lineup: Donita K. Paul, L.B. Graham, Jonathan Rogers and Eric Reinhold. You can read all about them on our Meet The Authors page, and peruse their wide selection of Books.

The FFT website just got a massive overhaul thanks to Jason Clement, and we’ll be issuing HTML banner ads very soon for you to put up on your websites and blogs to help us promote the tour.

And like last year, we’ll be doing the Daily Video Journal during the tour itself where you can follow along with us. And if you missed last year’s Video Journals-–no worries-–you can watch the entire collection in the 2007 Video Journal Library.

I suggest you read the entire Press Release, too, as it has a good accounting of last year’s success and what to look forward to this year.

To all those out on the West Coast, I look forward to meeting you!

Thanks for reading,

CH
