Life-Themes and Leadership Tips

While it seems the subjects of “age” and “getting older” are the brunt of many jokes, we would be remiss if we didn’t reflect on the fact that God invented the process. As such, there are some incredible benefits.

One of which is seeing life-themes emerge.

Although Jennifer and I have certainly had some highlights leading worship for thousands of people, that’s not the context God places us in most often. Rather, it’s is ministering to rural churches that are on the verge of “epoch” change.

A life-theme emerges: encouraging people that the idea that God likes to do big things in seemingly small places.

It’s a joy to fly home from a trip utterly spent. And my time here at Hope Community Church in Marlette, MI will be no exception. This place is in the midst of transforming their town for Jesus, and further, their county. In one year they’ve already moved from one building to a bigger building, and are transitioning to two services in less than a month.

Two tips to seeing a local church have a massive impact through word of mouth:

1.) Love your community. Every person on a church’s leadership team must be sold-out, head-over-heels in love with their region. If they’re not, they need to get the Father’s heart, step out of leadership, or move. People in a region can smell hirelings that are not 100% committed to a locale, and as a result the church will never grow. As my Senior Pastor once asked me, “Are your feet planted?”

2.) Love whoever God sends you, and whoever God sends you to. I just heard a story last night where a church leader did a mailing but told his secretary not to include the addresses of a trailer park. That is so anti-Christ it made me sick to my stomach. Yet we all have a little if that in us and it needs to be confronted. Loving the unlovely will spark revival every time: it’s what Jesus did for each of us.

Hope Community’s people clearly love their community and are walking testimonies of Jesus’ tangible love. I’m thrilled to be here for their one year anniversary weekend. My sincere congratulations to Pastors Paul & Erin Rohling. I’m behind you 100%.

So if you’re ever in Michigan’s thumb, you’ll be blessed to visit a powerful church touching God’s heart. ch:

Creation Festival East 2010

Most times in ministry, if you’re trained right, you go out of your way to honor people. No matter what. It’s what Jesus did. No reward other than His smile. No kickback other than a hand on your shoulder saying, “Good job, son.” When you’re in my line of work, especially if you “have a name” that people recognize (which is mainly my kids because I change their diapers, my church because they change mine, and the very few conferences I frequent because they help me buy diapers), people think it’s all glory. 10% maybe. The other 90% is doing things no one will ever see. The “grunge,” as my daddy calls it. I think it’s that way with every profession, passion, or hobby. Even raising kids. Even being a friend. 90% grunge, 10% glory. (Thanks Daddy Hopper).

But every now and then God finds a way to just mess with you. He goes out of His way to go over the top. To make you speechless.

The next four days will be that for me.

First, I got asked to play with Paul Rohling and my beautiful bride, Jennifer, at Creation, on the bill for tomorrow night. Pretty much freaked me out right. (Meet us at the Late Night Stage in the tent at 12-midnight!). My dad was a part of the very first festival back when it was called “Jesus” in the early 70′s. I never thought I’d be performing at it almost 40 years later.

Honored.

Understatement.

But then, president and now friend, Harry Thomas asked me to speak at 3pm on Saturday. Speak. At Creation. Uh, OK Harry. No problem. How do you say no to someone who is Jesus on the inside and Santa Clause on the outside?

Double honored.

“Oh, and would you be willing to lead worship for the final service on Sunday morning?”

Let me check my Eight Ball. Never mind, it just blew up. Sure.

The funniest part it, I haven’t really been thinking about it. Not up until right now as I’m writing this post. No, I’m not trying to be a prima donna. I’m serious. Maybe because I’m in denial? Maybe because I’m so busy I only take one 12-hour chunk at a time? Or, in the words of my good friend, Kelly Stone, who always manages to keep me humble and yet still remind me of my assignment, “You were born for this; it’s just another day…” Because in the end, it’s not about the music.

It never was.

It’s about the Listener.

If you’re coming out, please make sure to come say hi! And if you’re not, say hi right here in the comments! Oh, and @loswhit, I’m going to finally meet you so my wife can stop hearing me talk about one of my few unmet bromances.

Speaking of diapers, I think I need to change mine now. ch:

New Album Release Date Set

I hold in my hands the studio CD master for my next album (9th, for those keeping track), Live at the Lyric, recorded at Lyric Coffee House back in June of ’07 with guitar-virtuoso Paul Rohling. Special guests that night also included Jason Rodgers, Christian Fahey, and Ryan Grant. Today I’m sending all the design notes, pictures, liner notes, and credits to my graphic guru, Jason Clement. Then it’s off to ESP in Buffalo for duplication! The product release date is Tuesday, February 10th, with lots of tour dates being scheduled in NY, MI and possibly TN (just got word that Phil Keaggy might sit in with us if we gig in Nashville!). I’m also stoked because we’re going to roll out a number of sepcial packages that you can order, full of “signature collectible stuff.” (At least someone might find it interesting). These goods will only be availible for a limited time right here on our new online store (coming soon), but you can always order the CD from us (hard copy, or iTunes). To date, this is the first album I’ve created that I can actually listen to from start to finish without cringing at something I did (or didn’t do). Let the countdown begin! ch:

Live In The Studio

After almost a year-and-a-half of delays, I’m finally in the studio this week mixing the Live @ The Lyric album I recorded in June 2007 with Paul Rohling. We’ll be broadcasting live from the studio today, tomorrow, and Wednesday; check back frequently if we have the camera off when you happen to log on. If I have a free second I may even chat with you if you’re watching. Thanks gang!
